Japanese Financier from Tsurutontan – A Sweet Souvenir from Haneda Airport

A Beautifully Wrapped Japanese Sweet at Haneda Airport

When shopping for souvenirs in Japan, sometimes the packaging catches your eye before the product itself.

That was exactly what happened during our visit to Tsurutontan at Tokyo Haneda Airport.

After enjoying a delicious bowl of udon, we noticed some beautifully packaged Japanese-style sweets for sale.

One of them was a Wa Financier, a Japanese take on the classic French cake.

The elegant wrapping immediately caught my attention.

In Japan, the presentation of a gift is often just as important as what’s inside.

And this little box was a lovely example of that tradition.

What Is a Japanese Financier?

A financier is a small French cake traditionally made with almond flour and butter.

It’s known for its rich flavor and moist, tender texture.

Financiers are also popular in Japan, where confectionery makers often give them a local twist.

The Japanese word wa (和) means Japanese-style or Japanese harmony.

So a Wa Financier is essentially a French-inspired cake with a Japanese character.

It’s a nice example of how Japan takes a dessert from another country and creates something distinctive.

Let’s Try It!

The first thing I noticed was how moist the cake was.

Soft, tender, and pleasantly moist.

It had a richer sweetness than I initially expected.

But it wasn’t just ordinary sugary sweetness.

The flavor reminded me of kuromitsu, a traditional Japanese dark sugar syrup.

Kuromitsu has a deep, rich sweetness, somewhat similar to molasses or dark caramel.

That was the impression I got from this financier.

The sweetness had depth, giving the cake a distinctly Japanese feel.

For visitors who enjoy rich, sweet baked goods, this could be a very satisfying little treat.

Is It Worth Buying?

At ¥1,080 for approximately five pieces, this is a reasonably priced souvenir from Haneda Airport.

What I liked most was the combination of beautiful presentation and rich flavor.

The cake was moist, and its deep sweetness reminded me of Japanese dark sugar syrup.

However, if you prefer desserts with very little sweetness, this one might be a little rich for your taste.

My recommendation? Enjoy it with matcha or a slightly bitter Japanese green tea.

It’s a simple way to appreciate the Japanese character of this French-inspired cake.

Final Thoughts

This Wa Financier was an interesting little discovery at Haneda Airport.

The beautiful wrapping caught my attention first, but the moist texture and rich sweetness made it memorable.

It’s also a good example of how Japan combines Western-style baking with Japanese tastes and gift-giving traditions.

A small, beautifully wrapped taste of Japan — and a lovely souvenir to take home.
