Hakone Sengokuhara Prince Hotel Review: A Peaceful Stay Surrounded by Nature

Hotel

October 29–30, 2026 | Sengokuhara, Hakone, Japan

Hakone is one of Japan’s most popular destinations for hot springs, beautiful mountain scenery, and relaxing getaways from the city.

On my recent visit, I stayed at Hakone Sengokuhara Prince Hotel, a peaceful resort hotel surrounded by greenery and the mountains of Hakone.

While my main reason for visiting was a round of golf at the neighboring Daihakone Country Club, I discovered that the hotel itself has plenty to offer, even for non-golfers.

From beautiful views and interesting artwork to a Japanese hot spring and a lovely breakfast buffet, it turned out to be a very enjoyable overnight stay.

A Peaceful Hotel in the Heart of Sengokuhara

[Hotel exterior]

The hotel is located in Sengokuhara, a quieter area of Hakone known for its natural surroundings.

We arrived in late October, when the temperature was around 15°C (59°F). Coming from Yokohama, the air felt noticeably cooler, with a hint of autumn.

The hotel has a charming, low-rise design that blends nicely with its surroundings.

Rather than feeling like a large, modern city hotel, it has a relaxed, traditional resort atmosphere.

It is the kind of place where you can slow down and enjoy being away from the city.

The Best Part: Beautiful Views from the Room

[View from the guest room]

One of the highlights of our stay was the view from the room.

Through a distinctive arched window, we could see the beautifully maintained fairways of Daihakone Country Club, with the mountains of Hakone in the background.

The golf course has a remarkably open landscape, making the view feel spacious and peaceful.

Even if you don’t play golf, it’s a wonderful sight.

I particularly liked how the arched window framed the scenery, almost like a painting.

Simply sitting by the window and enjoying the view was one of the best moments of our stay.

Comfortable, but a Little Dated

[Guest room]

The guest room had a classic interior, with warm colors, traditional furniture, and a calm atmosphere.

However, I should mention that some parts of the room felt a little dated.

If you are expecting a newly renovated luxury hotel with modern facilities, you might find the room somewhat old-fashioned.

The bathroom was also a little underwhelming.

That said, the room was a pleasant place to relax, and the beautiful view more than made up for the slightly dated interior.

For me, the hotel’s atmosphere and surroundings were its greatest strengths.

A Japanese Hot Spring Experience

One of the advantages of staying in Hakone is the opportunity to enjoy an onsen, a traditional Japanese hot spring bath.

Although the bathroom in our room was nothing special, the hotel also has a hot spring bathing facility.

This is an attractive feature for travelers who want to experience Japanese bathing culture.

In Japan, soaking in a hot spring is often considered an essential part of a relaxing hotel stay, especially in mountain resort areas like Hakone.

For overseas visitors, it’s worth checking the bathing etiquette before using an onsen, as Japanese communal baths have their own customs.

Beautiful Artwork Around the Hotel

[Artwork and decorative objects]

Another thing I enjoyed was the artwork displayed throughout the hotel.

There were many interesting paintings and decorative pieces, adding character to the public spaces.

One piece that caught my attention was a colorful illustration of Hakone National Park, displayed above a decorative ceramic dog.

These details give the hotel a distinctive personality.

The combination of artwork, classic interiors, and mountain scenery creates an atmosphere that feels different from a typical modern resort.

I enjoyed discovering these small touches while walking around the hotel.

Tennis Courts and Outdoor Activities

Golf isn’t the only outdoor activity here.

I also noticed tennis courts at the hotel.

With the surrounding mountains and fresh air, Sengokuhara seems like a lovely place to enjoy outdoor activities or simply take a relaxing walk.

For golf enthusiasts, the location is particularly convenient.

Daihakone Country Club is right next door, only about a three-minute walk from the hotel.

But even without golf, the quiet surroundings make the hotel appealing as a peaceful getaway.

A Lovely Breakfast Buffet

[Breakfast buffet]

Breakfast was another enjoyable part of our stay.

The hotel served a buffet with a selection of Japanese and Western dishes.

I particularly liked the beautifully presented salad station.

The buffet area had a warm, inviting atmosphere, and the food displays were thoughtfully arranged.

Starting the day with a leisurely breakfast, rather than rushing out the door, is one of the pleasures of staying at a resort hotel.

Is Hakone Sengokuhara Prince Hotel Worth Staying At?

After spending a night here, I think the hotel’s main attraction is its peaceful location and beautiful natural setting.

There are certainly a few things to consider.

The guest rooms have a somewhat dated feel, and the in-room bathroom could be better.

However, there is a lot to appreciate:

  • Wonderful views of the golf course and surrounding mountains
  • A quiet, relaxing atmosphere
  • Interesting artwork throughout the hotel
  • An onsen bathing facility
  • Tennis courts and nearby outdoor activities
  • A pleasant breakfast buffet featuring regional ingredients

For travelers looking for a modern, high-tech luxury hotel, this might not be the ideal choice.

But if you prefer a quiet mountain retreat with classic charm, beautiful scenery, and access to a Japanese hot spring, Hakone Sengokuhara Prince Hotel is definitely worth considering.

I particularly recommend it for couples, golf enthusiasts, and travelers who want to experience a quieter side of Hakone.
